Tightening up a Paint Effect
Today’s post will describe an approach you can take to tighten up a paint preset. By tighten, we mean make it generate a more realistic representation of the source image, as opposed to generating a loose abstracted painting style.
Building a Paint Strategy
You can certainly build a finished painting in Studio Artist using a single paint or other effect preset. However, the real power of Studio Artist is the synergistic ability to combine together different paint presets and other visual components that work together to build up a particular artistic style. Today’s post will take a look at one simple ‘paint strategy’ that works with edited versions of a single paint preset in combination with a few image operation effects to create a rough textured paint style.

Soft Abstraction Effect
The image above shows a soft abstraction effect i was recently playing around with. We used the output of this effect in yesterday’s post on tiling as our initial starting canvas. Today’s post will detail how i created this particular soft abstraction effect. It’s created with a combination of the paint synthesizer and some interactive warping.
Auto-Masking a Paint Step to Build a Paint Effect
We recently discussed how to manually select an area of the canvas using lasso selection, and then work with the Mask checkbox control to mask automatic painting or image processing effects with the selection mask. This post will discuss how to use a black and white image processing effect to automatically generate an intelligent selection mask. We will then incorporate this image processing based auto-selection as an action step in a paint action sequence (PASeq). We will then use the automatically derived selection mask to inhibit auto-painting while building up a auto-rotoscope paint effect in the PASeq.
