Organic Complexity and Modulated Kaleidoscopic Effects

Organic patterns in nature are oftentimes balance symmetry making an symmetry breaking. The interaction of the 2 opposing symmetry making and breaking forces give organic patterns a visual complexity missing in artificial images that have pure mathematical symmetry. There are a number of different MSG processors that use internal modulation to make and break geometric…

Video Feedback Effect

Simulating a Video Feedback effect. The post called Simulating Video Feedback described how to build a simple paint action sequence that incorporated an Image Compressor ip op effect and a MSG rotation and scaling effect to simulate analog video feedback. This post take a second look at that post, and shows how to build…

MSG Symmetry Patterning Animation

The image above is a frame capture from a MSG based procedural animation. A single MSG preset was run in loop action mode to generate the animation output. I opened a movie stream before starting the loop action run of the MSG preset, so each cycle of the loop action processing was output as a…

Rutt Etra Style Effect Using a MSG Processor

Today’s post continues our examination of Rutt Etra style processing effects. As we mentioned yesterday, the Rutt Etra video synthesizer was an influential early analog video synthesizer built in the 70s. The Rutt Etra style is based on modulating video scan lines, so you can think of it as a kind of displacement mapping effect.…

Stacked MSG Procedural Shape Animation

In yesterday’s post we used 2 temporal generators to build a procedural shape animation from a MSG preset. The preset was based on the 1C Abstract5 processor. Today we use 3 different stacked instances of this processor in a single MSG preset with 3 temporal generators to build a more complex time varying shape animation.
