The image above is a frame capture from an animation i’m currently working on for scoring some music provided by Voice of Eye and Thomas Dimuzio. Today’s post will focus on some approaches you can use to generate the symmetry effect seen in the animation frame.

As we have mentioned here before, symmetry can be a powerful visual component of any artwork. This is because the brain’s visual cortex has modules specially designed to recognize symmetry in visual imagery, so building symmetry into a piece of art of an animation creates a powerful sub-conscious sensation in the viewer.

One easy approach to creating a symmetry effect using MSG is shown below.

Note that a single 3CMirrorReflect processor is used in this simple MSG effect. It processes the 3 input streams for the MSG effect (RSrc,GSrc,BSrc) by connecting these streams to the 3 color input Ports for the processor (In R,In G,In B). The 3 color output Ports for the processor (Out R,Out G,Out B) are connected to the 3 color image streams that are used for the output of any MSG effect (ROut,GOut,BOut).

The 2nd gallery image above shows the Generic Editor controls for the MSG effect ( which define the IP Source for the effect and the canvas compositing options). Note that the IP Source is set to the Source Image. You can see the source image used for the example in the Source Area preview at the top of the 2nd gallery image.

The 3rd gallery image above shows off the different adjustable parameter options available for the 3CMirrorReflect processor. Note that the horizontal and vertical centering are both set to 50 %. The 4th gallery image shows off some different mutated variations that can be generated by the simple MSG symmetry effect.
