DualMode Paint Tunnel Animation Effect

Today’s post combines a paint preset that draws luminescent rectangular bars along with an interactive warp effect to create an animating paint tunnel effect.

I built up today’s DualMode Paint preset example by doing some hand editing to modify an existing DualMode Paint preset. DualModePaintTunnel1

For my DualMode Paint DualOp I wanted to have a warp effect that pulled the canvas in towards the center. So I selected the Warp option for the DualOp parameter in the DualMode Paint Editor (1st gallery image below).

I then switched to Interactive Warp operation mode and selected the Push-Pull warp type (2nd gallery image above). I used the mouse to interactive generate a warp effect that pulled the canvas in towards the center.

For the paint synthesizer part of the effect, I wanted to have a series of luminescent rectangles sweep in a clockwise direction around the borders of the canvas. So vertical bars sweep from left to right across the canvas, then horizontal bars sweep top to bottom across the canvas, then the opposite to complete one clockwise border cycle.

I used the Region Fill as Brush option for the Pen Mode (3rd gallery image above). Region Fill as Brush Pen Mode uses the auto-generated paint path to generate a region that is temporarily used as the Source Brush to generate a dynamic paint nib. The Region as Brush Mode control panel was configured so that the region Generator parameter was set to Horz/Vert Bars (4th gallery image above). This option generates a rectangular bar region based on the current auto-generated paint path. Which ever paint path direction (horizontal or vertical) is longest defines the type of rectangle (horizontal or vertical) that is generated. The region extent in the perpendicular direction determines the width of the rectangle.

I used the Border Full-In Clockwise option for the Path Start control panel Generator parameter, so that I would get a series of clockwise sweeps around the border of the canvas for my generated rectangles (5th gallery image above). The Grid H and V Spacing (horizontal and vertical spacing) were both set to 10 pixels. You could adjust that accordingly if you wanted the sweeps to be faster (make them bigger to space the generated rectangles further apart).

I used an ellipse for the Path Type in the Path Shape control panel to make the auto-generation of the rectangles from the generated path paths easy to control (6th gallery image above). The Path Angle was set to Fixed Hatch in the Path Angle control panel (7th gallery image above).

The Paint Fill Setup control panel was configured to use a Paint Brush Load option for the Fill From parameter (8th gallery image above). So the source brush nib generated by the region fill as brush pen mode generator is filled with a paint nib generated from the output of the Paint Brush Load control panel.

The Paint Brush Load control panel is setup to use a Canvas Contraction option for the Source, and a PaintColor MeanShift 3 option for the Algorithm (9th gallery image above). This particular set of parameter options generates a fractal fill pattern by first contraction warping the canvas in the area of the paint nib as the source to the algorithm processing, and then color mapping that contracted canvas image to match the current source color. This Paint Brush Load configuration gives the luminescent quality to the painted rectangles.

A short paint animation of my DualMode Paint Tunnel effect is available for viewing here. I just opened a new Movie Stream (File : Stream : New Movie Stream menu command), set the stream write flag to Enable Write on Op End, and then pressed the Action button and let the DualMode Paint preset auto-paint for awhile. I then pressed the space bar to stop the auto-painting, and then closed the open movie stream to finish off my completed animation file.
